Decisions, Decisions

Hi, this painting started off as 3 boats............yep I know thats hard to believe.  Have been following the Strathmore free classes and this was supposed to be abstract art showing the boats I mentioned.  Still am moving on and not worrying about the missing boats and going with what I've got............

Stretched canvas in Acrylics

The colourings look different because the light suddenly changed

Now the decision is do I mount it on Black or White............my husband says white and I thought black....what colour do you think?

Last Friday's showing of my paintings went well, there was some positive comments and felt quite pleased, but it is the most scary experience ever especially when you have to stand by them.  The other students were very at ease showing and talking about their work, most of them are very experienced so suppose confidence in their work comes naturally.

We have snow again and its bitter cold..........perhaps if we all shout together and yell for Spring someone up there will hear and take pity on us................

Wishing you a very happy weekend and thank you for popping in to see me.  Am off to Paint Party Friday where I get to see some real fab art work.  Hugs Annette x

A gorgeously atmospheric piece of artwork Netty and love the bold colours. I'm with you on the black as it makes the colours pop so well.
No snow here but freezing cold!
Hugs, Fliss xx

I'm also voting for the black... It really makes the colours shine. I love the piece itself... dramatic and, as Fliss says, atmospheric.

So glad to hear the show went well... It may be that the others are naturally confident, or they may just be really good at faking it!!

Forget about the boats, it looks great as it is! And I definitely prefer the black, it makes the colours pop so beautifully.

Never mind about the boats, this has turned out a very striking painting. I would say mount it on black, makes it pop. Happy PPF :)

This is a beautiful painting with very striking colours. I would mount it in black as it brings out the black in the trees and is a good contrast to the colours

Love the colors on this, and certainly mount it on black!! :) Hope you get some warmer weather soon, it's been cold here too!

this looks great with or without the boats! I love the colours - makes me think of a great sunset. Initially I thought the black mount but then it seemed to join up with the black lines to make a prison cell window - if you know what I mean? the white mount makes it more bright and open

I love the strength in your color choice and the bold shapes, Netty. As to the frame, I believe black would work best with this piece. Blessings!

Lovely, interesting, great colors! I would mount on white, to keep it fresh, but black looks nice, too ... I can see your dilemma! <3

gorgeous landscape!! I see trees which pop in this painting when framed in the black-that's my vote:) I'm watching the Strathmore series also.No matter who the artist is or what kind of art they share I can always learn something.Happy PPF!

Gorgeous for sure Annette. I like the white, and the black. I guess it depends on what you want to stand out. The white draws my eyes to the landscape and gives it great depth and shadows. The black makes the trees the stand out more. Personally I like the white, but what do I know? Beautiful any way you frame it. ~Diane

Black makes the colors more vibrant! Beautiful color combo :) happy ppf!

Oh how pretty! It's funny how your piece may start out as one thing and end up something totally different. I would typically say black background but I think the colors are popping more on the white with this one. Happy PPF!

Love it on the black Annette as it flows into the design :)

Oh Annette, this is sensational. The colors are intensely vibrationally rich and speak to so much around us. You have blended them so beautifully. Not an easy task I am sure! I really enjoy it! Thanks for sharing Annette! Happy blogging on Fridays.

Beautiful work Annette. I would prefer white, but.... Hugs, Valerie

Gorgeous colors, Netty. I agree with you because the black makes the colors "pop" and there seems to be no white in the painting to match the mat. However, I can't see the sails. They may indeed be white and are covered by the rising waves. Who knows?

SAMARA said...

Hey there Giggles! Annette, gotta go with white, sorry honey...it really offsets the colors. I had to come back. This pic is just too stunning to miss on every site where I put mine. I love love love and starting with boats. can you imagine how crazy we are as artists! who ever knows where we will land (both in life and our art! ) Oh, maybe I'm just talking about me!!!! Hey, also - I just LOVE your profile pic. You are as cute as a button!!!! Lovies again. OK, now a hug too. lol Samara

Oohh, such gorgeous colours, I love it. I see an avenue of tree trunks soaring up to their canopies out of view above. I'm with the consensus for black.

Happy PPF!

Voting for black too.. makes your lovely colors pop. bummer about the snow. I read that there was a warrant out for punxsuntawny Phil for fraud..for blowing the forecast that Spring was close. LOL HPPF

I think the piece will look good with either backing -- the colors are striking and the composition is compelling. There's lots of room for imagination here. I know most people are saying black, but it looks more closed off with the black, more of the cell image that Nic mentioned. I would leave it open with the white -- it floats more. Either way, though, GREAT PIECE.

Tracey FK said...

I LOVE this... and black mounting baby... never listen to the husbands ... but the black makes the whole composition come together...xx

Yep definitely black! I love this, so simple and beautiful!

I love your freedom! Isn't it wonderful not to worry about what a canvas is "supposed" to be and let something totally unexpected emerge? I love the finished piece.

Hi Netty...Lovely colors here...and I would go with white because I feel the trees would really stand out then. But the truth is the painting speaks for itself and will do its own talking...great work!
Cheers for you on the successful show!
Thank you for visiting me, I really do feel so great!

Lorraine said...

I found this workshop difficult too as his boats suddenly emerge. I like this colourful background and I am thinking perhaps black silhouettes of boats with just a touch of white..going to get a move on now and start to do my boat piece so thanks for reminding me

Love the colours, I think you have loadsa black already- I would go for white personally. Happy PPF and yay for the successful show! Go girl go.

I vote black. The black brings out the verticals, were they the masts of the boats? It's really a beautiful painting, there's a lot of depth in those vibrant colors. It looks like a beautiful sunset.

Carol said...

I'm voting black also....it will just make the awesome colors POP!

I go for black, it fits way better I think ;) what a wonderful bright colorcomposition...don´t matter that the boats are out on the sea ;)

love the colors netty. so bright! I prefer the white because it shows the boldness of your painting more. :)

I think I love it on black! :) I love the painting, it's so much fun. I like how you tried one thing, and with acrylics you can change it so easily! Have a wonderful day!

Unknown said...

beautiful colors and composition. I like the white better -- to me, the black overwhelms the painting and completely changes the mood. It makes me feel like the viewer is in a confined, dark space. But either way, it's beautiful.

DVArtist said...

Well you are not going to believe this, however, I dreamt of a painting like this last night. How wild is that?
So I can say this is the painting of my dreams.

Definitely black. :) Wonderful colors!

lissa said...

wonderful piece! I would go with the white frame just because it opens up the artwork while a black frame usually kind of enclosed an artwork.

thanks for your visit. have a great day.

Netty no worries about the boat as even without them it looks fabulous. The colors are stunning and even I feel a black background will make those colors pop.
Have a great week and yeah we are all tired of this weather!!

These colors are so striking! I love the composition and the fact that it started as something altogether different. I vote black too, xoxo

Hi Netty! I vote black background on your beautiful painting. The black is a better contrast with your bright colors. The black also integrates the black lines you have in your painting. It is a gorgeous painting and I say,"who needs boats?" Haha Thank you for the very nice comment you left ony blog as well!!! You are so sweet and so talented. Hugs, Candy

minnemie said...

You certianly did not miss the boat on this one;-) Beautifully striking. I like the black for it makes my eye move around and through the lines (that I intertret as trees) in the painting. It adds to the whole, I think.

Lisabella Russo said...

It looks great with both white and black, but I prefer it with the black. It's quite lovely and the colors are wonderful!

Definitely black, Annette. It will set off the gorgeous colours of this painting! just beautiful, boats or no boats :)
